Medication Summary
The goals of pharmacotherapy are to reduce morbidity and to prevent complications.
H2-receptor antagonists
Class Summary
Indicated for recalcitrant conjunctival papilloma.
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
May enhance immune system by inhibiting suppressor T-cell function and augmenting delayed-type hypersensitivity responses.
Immune modulators
Class Summary
May induce delayed hypersensitivity reaction causing the tumor to regress. Exact mechanism is unknown.
Dinitrochlorobenzene
Contact sensitizers that induce allergic contact dermatitis, causing a localized inflammation and immune response.
Interferon
Class Summary
Naturally produced proteins with antiviral, antitumor, and immunomodulatory actions.
Interferon alpha-2b (Intron A)
Protein product manufactured by recombinant DNA technology. Mechanism of antitumor activity is not clearly understood; however, direct antiproliferative effects against malignant cells and modulation of host immune response may play important roles.
Antineoplastic agents
Class Summary
Inhibit cell growth and proliferation.
Mitomycin-C (Mutamycin)
Acts like alkylating agent, inducing DNA cross-linking, primarily with guanine and cytosine base pairs, which, in turn, inhibits DNA synthesis.
