Ganglion Cyst: Follow-up
Updated: Aug 10, 2009
Outcome and Prognosis
Regardless of treatment, recurrence is possible, but the cause is unclear. Arthroscopy has been shown to have a lower recurrence rate than open excision, and arthroscopy has no associated risk of scapholunate instability postoperatively.7
Future and Controversies
Pharmacologic agents are under constant investigation in the medical arena. Potential advances in sclerosing agents specific to the treatment of ganglion cysts may lead to a definitive medical treatment of ganglions, which would avoid surgery.
George J Kouris, MD, and Gordon Derman, MD, are gratefully acknowledged for their contributions to this topics.
