Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Workup
Updated: Mar 24, 2009
Workup
Imaging Studies
While radiographs are not essential, they usually are obtained.
Radiograph of a patient who is skeletally mature. Note that the tibial tubercle is enlarged and there is an ossicle. A bursa was overlying this.
Radiographs show fragmentation of the tibial tubercle apophysis and, at times, a separate ossicle.13
Histologic Findings
Lazerte and Rapp examined resected operative specimens in patients with Osgood-Schlatter disease.5 They demonstrated avulsion fractures in the distal portion of the tibial tubercle. Ehrenborg examined histologic specimens of bone excised from portions of tibial tubercles and found viable cancellous bone without evidence of inflammation or avascular necrosis.6,7
