Medication Summary
Antisecretory medications are generally used for the treatment of acid-peptic stricture of the esophagus. PPIs are the most efficacious drugs, and the class is usually used routinely.
Proton pump inhibitors
Class Summary
PPIs specifically inhibit the H+/K+ -ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell, resulting in a potent antisecretory effect.
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
Decreases gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the parietal cell H+/K+ -ATP pump.
Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
Suppresses gastric acid secretion by specifically inhibiting H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells.
Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
Decreases gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the parietal cell H+/K+ ATP pump.
Pantoprazole (Protonix)
Decreases gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the parietal cell H+/K+ ATP pump.
Esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium)
S-isomer of omeprazole. Inhibits gastric acid secretion by inhibiting H+/K+ -ATPase enzyme system at secretory surface of gastric parietal cells.
