Diagnostic Considerations

Congestive splenomegaly, resulting in hypersplenism, is a consideration in the differential diagnosis of aplastic anemia, as is systemic lupus erythematosus.

Sepsis, as well as an infectious etiology, such as infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), mycobacteria, cytomegalovirus (CMV), or EBV, should also be considered.
