Chester Porphyria Clinical Presentation
- Author: Koyamangalath Krishnan, MD, FRCP, FACP; Chief Editor: Emmanuel C Besa, MD more...
Patients with Chester porphyria may present with the following history:
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation and vomiting
- Psychologic disturbance
- High blood pressure
Patients with Chester porphyria may present with the following physical findings:
- Elevated blood pressure, consistent with hypertension
- Motor neuropathy, as suggested by flaccid paralysis
- Evidence of psychosis (delusion, hallucinations)
- Renal failure
- Skin manifestations – Not observed
Genetic studies have linked the Chester porphyria gene to chromosome arm 11q. Precipitating factors of Chester porphyria include the following drugs:
- Aluminum hydroxide
- Tricyclic antidepressants
Other precipitating factors are as follows:
- Metabolic abnormalities such as hyponatremia (also listed as a complication)
