Cardiac Formulas

Mean arterial pressure

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) = [systolic blood pressure + (2 X diastolic blood pressure)] / 3

The reference range is 70-100 mm Hg.

Cardiac index

Cardiac index = cardiac output / body surface area

The reference range is 2.5-4 L/min/m2.

Stroke volume

Stroke volume = cardiac output / heart rate

The reference range is 60-120 mL/beat. [1]

Systemic vascular resistance

Systemic vascular resistance = (mean arterial pressure – mean right atrial pressure) x 80 / cardiac output

The reference range is 800-1200 dynes X sec/cm3.

Pulmonary vascular resistance

Pulmonary vascular resistance = (mean pulmonary artery pressure – mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure) X 80 / cardiac output

The reference range is 125-250 dynes X sec/cm3.
