Updated: Mar 10, 2009
Follow-up
Complications
- Underlying medical illness (eg, sepsis, pneumonia, fecal impaction, urinary tract infection) should be suspected in a patient with Parkinson's disease (PD) who undergoes a rapid deterioration or has new PD symptoms.
Prognosis
- Prognosis of Parkinson's disease is discussed in Mortality/Morbidity.
Patient Education
- The following 4 national organizations publish newsletters for patients with Parkinson's disease and their families:
- For excellent patient education resources, visit eMedicine's Dementia Center. Also, see eMedicine's patient education articles Parkinson Disease and Parkinson Disease Dementia.
Miscellaneous
Medicolegal Pitfalls
- Consultation should be obtained from an attorney regarding flexible power of attorney and a living will prior to the onset of dementia associated with the advanced form of Parkinson's disease.
Special Concerns
- Proper nutritional support is essential for patients with Parkinson's disease, including adequate dietary fiber to prevent the common problem of constipation.
