Intervention

Medicolegal Pitfalls

  • Ischemic colitis sometimes develops proximal to a colonic carcinoma as a result of large-bowel obstruction. It is therefore essential to rule out colonic carcinoma in the appropriate clinical setting.
  • Among young adults, ischemic colitis has strong preponderance in females taking oral contraceptives. Physicians treating hemorrhagic colitis in young pregnant women or those taking oral contraceptives should consider the possibility of ischemic colitis.
  • Sickle cell disease is a rare cause of ischemic colitis. It should be considered in patients with crises of abdominal sickle cell veno-occlusive pain. If not recognized, the condition can be fatal.
  • Ischemic colitis caused by mesenteric hematoma as a complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography has been reported. Prompt evaluation and awareness of potential complications should help capture potentially life-threatening sequelae of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
