  1. Institute early broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy based on clinical data;
  2. Identify the likely bacterial etiologies of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP);
  3. Identify the importance of and risk factors for antibiotic resistance in VAP;
  4. Recognize the important role of establishing a microbiological diagnosis in VAP;
  5. Institute appropriate definitive antibiotic therapy based on culture data.
