Corticosteroids

Class Summary

These agents have anti-inflammatory properties and cause profound and varied metabolic effects. In addition, they modify the body's immune response to diverse stimuli.

Prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone, Meticorten)

Prednisone is useful in many inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It must be metabolized to the active metabolite prednisolone for effect. Conversion may be impaired by liver disease. Prednisone may decrease inflammation by reversing increased capillary permeability and suppressing PMN activity.
