Diagnostic Considerations

There are several other conditions in the differential diagnosis of porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), including epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA), bullous lupus erythematosus, other porphyrias, and pseudoporphyria. EBA, bullous lupus erythematosus, pseudoporphyria, and other porphyrias can exhibit a similar blistering pattern to PCT. However, in EBA and pseudoporphyria, there is no hypertrichosis observed. [38] Failure to obtain sufficient biochemical confirmation of the diagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment of non-PCT disorders.
