Diagnostic Considerations

Conditions to consider in the differential diagnosis of neurotrophic keratitis include the following:

  • Exposure keratopathy
  • Limbal deficiency
  • Topical anesthetic abuse

Carefully evaluate patients with herpes simplex or herpes zoster for corneal hypesthesia. Patients undergoing surgery for trigeminal neuralgia or acoustic neuroma should be carefully evaluated postoperatively for corneal hypesthesia.
