Beta2-adrenergic Agonist Agent

Class Summary

These agents relieve reversible bronchospasm by relaxing smooth muscles of the bronchi.

Albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin)

Albuterol is a beta-agonist used for bronchospasm refractory to epinephrine. It stimulates adenyl cyclase to convert ATP to cAMP and causes bronchodilation. It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by action on beta2-receptors, with little effect on cardiac muscle contractility. Albuterol may decrease mediator release from mast cells and basophils and inhibit airway microvascular leakage.

Albuterol is available as a liquid for nebulizer, MDI, and dry powder inhalers.
