Diagnostic Considerations

Important considerations

Note that differentiation of a hepatocellular adenoma from a high-grade hepatocellular carcinoma can be difficult, if not impossible.

Women with hepatocellular adenomas should avoid oral contraceptive pills. Moreover, affected women should avoid pregnancy to prevent rapid tumor growth and possible rupture. Adenomas should be resected before women become pregnant.

However, pregnancy in women with glycogen storage disease and adenomas may be safe based on a limited case series. [29]

Other problems to be considered

Also consider the following conditions in the evaluation of patients with suspected hepatocellular adenoma:

  • Echinococcal cyst
  • Focal fatty change
  • Focal nodular hyperplasia
  • Hemangioma
  • Hepatoblastoma
  • Infiltrative liver disease
  • Inflammatory pseudotumor
  • Leiomyosarcoma
  • Lymphoma
  • Nodular regenerative hyperplasia
