Diagnostic Considerations

Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion for protein-losing enteropathy as an uncommon complication of inflammatory bowel disease, particularly in the setting of hypoproteinemia without concomitant hepatic disease, severe malnutrition, or proteinuria. [25, 26, 27]  

The following conditions should also be considered in patients with suspected protein-losing enteropathy:

  • Cutaneous burns

  • Parasitic infections

  • Viral enteritis
