Diagnostic Considerations

Important considerations

Note that a delay in the diagnosis of ALS can result in serious consequences, particularly with acute ALS, because diagnostic delay can lead to bowel perforation or gangrene, with resultant intra-abdominal sepsis.

Other problems to be considered include the following:

  • Bile reflux gastritis

  • Pancreatic pseudocyst or cystic tumor

  • Mesenteric cyst

  • Mesenteric lymphoid hamartoma

  • Intra-abdominal abscess

  • Cystic metastases
