Diagnostic Considerations

History and physical examination remain the best means of diagnosing hernias. The review of systems should carefully seek out associated conditions, such as the following:

  • Ascites
  • Constipation
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Cough
  • Groin abscess
  • Hematoma
  • Lipoma
  • Lymphadenitis
  • Obstructive uropathy
  • Pseudoaneurysm
  • Spermatocele
  • Tumor
  • Undescended or retracted testes
  • Varicocele
