Diagnostic Considerations

The three conditions most commonly included in the differential diagnosis of aplastic anemia are inherited marrow-failure syndromes, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In addition, consider other causes of pancytopenia with hypocellular bone marrow, [5] sepsis, and infectious etiologies, such as infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), mycobacteria, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
