Medical Care

No known specific treatment exists for orbiviral infections. Supportive care is recommended.

In a study looking at Bluetongue Virus and African horse sickness virus, polyanionic aromatic compound aurintricarboxylic acid (ATA) was trialed as it has been shown to have broad-spectrum antiviral activity. It was shown to successfully prevent replication in vitro; however, it was not protective in vivo. More research will need to be pursued to determine if ATA is a treatment option. [28]

Prevention

Bluetongue Virus Reverse Genetics helped discover the primary replication stage. With this knowledge, Entry-Competent-Replication-Abortive (ECRA) vaccines were created, which compete with the virus for its primary replication stage. A series of trials have shown that the cattle and sheep that were vaccinated had complete protection from virulent virus challenge. [29] . Similarly, a RV vaccine has shown great promise for the African horse sickness virus. If human cases begin to have increased mortality, this could be a great resource for human vaccinations.
