Class Summary

Therapy must cover all likely pathogens in the context of this clinical setting. Prophylactic antibiotics should be administered based on maternal weight.


First-generation semisynthetic cephalosporin that arrests bacterial cell wall synthesis, inhibiting bacterial growth. Based on general surgical procedures the suggested recommended dose is 2g prophylactic dose for women who weigh >80kg (175 lbs.), with an increase to 3g for those who weight >120kg (265 lbs.).
