Diagnostic Considerations

The key diagnostic issue in dysmenorrhea is differentiating primary dysmenorrhea from secondary dysmenorrhea.

In addition to the conditions listed in the differential diagnosis, other problems to be considered include the following:

  • Peritonitis

  • Pregnancy or pregnancy loss

  • Uterine neoplasm, benign or malignant

  • Iatrogenic causes
