Approach Considerations

Studies that may be considered in the assessment of a patient with a paraphilic disorder include the following:

  • Standard medical workup, including sequential multiple analysis (SMA), complete blood count (CBC), rapid plasma reagent (RPR), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level or thyroid function test (TFT)
  • HIV screen, if indicated
  • Hepatitis panel, if indicated
  • Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS), if indicated
  • Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), if intracranial pathology is suspected or if the neurologic examination findings are abnormal
  • Penile strain gauge
  • Abel assessment for interest in paraphilia
  • Phallometric testing
  • Electroencephalography (EEG), if indicated
