Diagnostic Considerations

All potential causes of respiratory acidosis should be considered (see Etiology and Pathophysiology). These include lung disease, neuromuscular diseases, and central neurologic depression. The neuromuscular and skeletal conditions that should be considered include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophy, severe kyphoscoliosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and myasthenia gravis.
