Diagnostic Considerations

Diseases that cause diffuse parenchymal lung disease, including chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and sarcoidosis, are among some of the differential diagnosis for silicosis. [40]  Furthermore, in a Korean study, patients diagnosed with IPF with occupational dust exposure had an earlier onset of disease and a worse prognosis. [41]  Obtain a good occupational exposure history, especially as there is a long latency period between symptom development and silica exposure.
