Diagnostic Considerations

Other problems to be considered in the differential diagnosis include the following:

  • Hypercoagulable state: Malignancy, oral contraceptive use and hormone replacement therapy, homocystinemia, antithrombin III deficiency, protein C or S deficiency, factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin A 20210 mutation, antiprothrombin antibodies
  • Atherosclerotic vascular disease, including multiple cholesterol emboli syndrome
  • Systemic necrotizing vasculitis

Differential Diagnoses
