Diagnostic Considerations

The diagnosis of urethral syndrome (urethral pain syndrome) is one of exclusion. The distinction between urethral syndrome and mild interstitial cystitis (IC) can be particularly challenging. These lower urinary tract pain syndromes may actually simply represent different points along the spectrum of the same general disease process.

Other problems to be considered include the following:

  • Bacterial cystitis

  • Painful bladder syndrome

  • Vulvodynia
