Diagnostic Considerations

Particular care must be exercised when a diagnosis of hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) considering this diagnosis in an elderly person or a person with comorbid disease.

In addition to the conditions listed in the differential diagnosis (see below), other problems to be considered include the following:

  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

  • Chronic nasal congestion

  • Reduced alar nasal muscle activity
