Diagnostic Considerations

Except in patients with clearly documented acute exposure, a broad differential diagnosis should be considered. Alternative explanations for symptoms may include other toxidromes, underlying medical conditions, and trauma. Other problems to consider may include the following:

  • CNS stimulant ingestions and overdose
  • Camphor toxicity
  • Strychnine toxicity
  • Picrotoxin toxicity
  • Sodium monofluoroacetate (SMFA) toxicity
  • Hypoxemia
  • Idiopathic epilepsy
