Diagnostic Considerations

The acute toxicity of PCP is often misdiagnosed because of its similarity to schizophrenic episodes. In fact, PCP-induced psychosis may respond to antipsychotics, which may further confound the diagnosis. Other problems to be considered in the differential diagnosis of PCP toxicity include the following:

  • Lysergic acid diethylamide toxicity
  • Plant poisoning, mescaline
  • Malignant hyperthermia
  • Serotonin syndrome
