Diagnostic Considerations

Important considerations

In children, left bundle branch block (LBBB) is not a benign entity, and it is associated with anatomic malformations and abnormalities of the conduction system. It may progress to complete heart block and sudden death.

Children with LBBB require a complete workup and consultation with a pediatric cardiologist. Failure to properly evaluate a child with newly diagnosed LBBB could result in a poor outcome, such as bodily injury from abrupt syncope, permanent neurologic damage, or death.

Other problems to be considered

Also consider the following conditions in patients with suspected LBBB:

  • Intraventricular conduction delay

  • Isorhythmic idioventricular rhythm

  • Supraventricular tachycardia with aberrancy

  • Ventricular paced rhythm
