Conditions to consider in the differential diagnosis of myocarditis include the following:

  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Kawasaki disease

  • Myocardial infarction in childhood

  • Malignant pericardial effusion

  • Bacterial pericarditis

  • Constrictive pericarditis

  • Viral pericarditis

  • Rheumatic fever

  • Rheumatic heart disease

  • Rickettsial infection
