Diagnostic Considerations

In addition to the conditions cited in the differential diagnosis list, other problems to be considered include the following:

  • Pregnancy complications (eg, threatened abortion, incomplete abortion, missed abortion, ectopic pregnancy, trophoblastic neoplasia)
  • Thyroid disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cervical polyps
  • Uterine polyps
  • Exogenous hormones (eg, oral contraceptive pills)
  • Hyperprolactinemia (as due to an intracranial prolactinoma or medication use)
  • Medication misuse or abuse (eg, prolonged use of estrogen or progesterone)
  • Vaginal trauma or foreign body
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Coagulation pathway disorders
  • Leukemia
  • Oncologic treatments, such as chemotherapy [24]
